Summary In this paper I address the involvement of the body in thought, specifically, in the musical practice of beginning jazz improvisation. Previous and ongoing research has examined the role of the body in thought in the realm of the development of dance movement (12, 14, 16), music (18), as well as the underlying brain mechanisms involved in intelligent action (13, 15). Indeed, central musical elements such as loudness, tonal colors, musical beat and tempo, dynamic changes, melodic phrasing and contours, chromatic harmonies, musical accents, accelerando, syncopation, rhythmic ostinato, among other aspects, form the bodily basis of meaning in the musical domain (16, 18). Indeed, pedagogical practices such as the Dalcroze, Kodaly, Orff, and Suzuki methods capitalize on the fact that basic elements of music (rhythm and musical dynamics, intervallic relationships such as pitch and melody, harmony, and sonority) can be most effectively taught through physical motion using such devices as rhythm, rhythmic solfege, and improvisation (5, 18). Whereas infants and young children naturally coordinate music with expressive characteristics (e.g., bodily and physical motion; gesture, posture, and facial expression; speech and vocal intonation; and emotional expression), by middle childhood formal characteristics of music become divorced from expressive ones (20, 23). I discuss the microgenesis of beginning jazz improvisation demonstrating how beginning improvisers learn to bootstrap expressive characteristics using cross-domain analogies and metaphor (17), bodily self-monitoring (21), as well as retention of central musical features. “To define jazz (as to define any phenomenon of human action) is to describe the body’s ways” (David Sudnow, Ways of the Hand). Introduction It has been suggested that novice improvisers in jazz are fixated, like infants, at the sensorimotor phase in which physical and technical problems are the order of the day. In contrast, expert jazz improvisers have overcome most of these seeming musical impediments and possess highly articulated but flexible musical strategies and are thus better able to adapt to changing musical circumstances (3). In a word, they have developed sophisticated metacognitive skills. Indeed, there is something to this scheme as, no doubt, technical and musical facility with the voice or instrument frees up the improviser to attend to such things as melodic line and contour, harmonic texture as well as facilitate dialogue with other musicians. Earlier musicologists and music theorists also bought into this scheme insofar as melody, harmony, and rhythm were ultimately seen as arising largely from mental activities (8). Cognitive psychologists, too, have maintained that generative processes in creativity arise from a confluence of factors including basic musical structures stored in LTM, tacit knowledge (partly unconscious), and external memory aids (e.g., the musical score), that is, a largely mental process of random generation of musical ideas followed by a choice among available options in terms of selectional criteria (e.g., chord structure) (6). But, there is also something missing in this proposal. For one, conscious (or unconscious) awareness of structural elements of musical performance does not direct real-time musical expression. Something else is contributing to musical performance and musical expressivity and that something else is the body, that is, sensorimotor experience (4, 15, 18). For instance, it has been suggested that musical imagery is kinesthetically based and creates correlative feeling states in the individual (9). Nonetheless, while experienced improvisers may have a leg up (pun intended) on novice improvisers, their improvisational fluidity results from (rather than is superceded by, in the Piagetian version) “encoding” important musical elements in the body and in bodily processes (10, 11, 19). That is, they have successfully integrated expressive or “figural” elements with formal or “metric” ones (1, 23). To be sure, infants and young children naturally coordinate music with expressive characteristics (i.e., bodily and physical motion), yet by middle childhood formal characteristics of music become divorced from expressive ones (20, 23). After all, what does it mean to be (musically) expressive? Cultural learning obviously plays a role in musical expression, but analogies to non-musical domains form an important basis of musical expressivity. That is, expressive devices such as musical shape and location of rhythmic, harmonic, and melodic-thematic material are stored in the musical structure by analogy to nonmusical domains, that is, by way of cross-domain analogies (or metaphor) between music and the body (17). These nonmusical domains include bodily and physical motion; gesture, posture, and facial expression; speech and vocal intonation; as well as emotional expression. For example, traditional descriptions of the use of analogy in musical works suggest it shapes and articulates temporal contractions and expansions (e.g., Beethoven or Mozart) or chains patterns of repetition (e.g., Shubert or Stravinsky). Similarly, structural parallels that occur in musical compositions (e.g., Wagner or Webern) arise when the organization of melody, rhythm or musical form in one musical parameter is analogous to another one (7). In improvised as well as scored music, however, musicians bootstrap expressive characteristics by analogy to bodily and physical motion (20, 21). These elemental analogical relations are constituted by enactive (analogies to physical movement), perceptual (analogies to physical qualities), physiognomic (analogies to emotions) and synesthetic (analogies to the senses) experiences that the improviser draws on in the service of musical expression to varying degrees (17). Nonetheless, whereas in scored music expressive contour is fitted to preexisting musical sequences, in improvised music notes are chosen in situ along with their expressive contour. Indeed, expressive body movements communicate emotion by way of both application of well-developed emotional reactivity to prevailing aural customs as well as by trial and error (21). Method and Results We examined talk-aloud protocols and videotapes of two beginning jazz improvisers including the author (6 months) and a computer software designer (3 years). We also examined well-known jazz musicians self-reports about their own bodily processes and ability to retain sonic features of key musical elements. Let’s first look at what jazz musicians say about the relation of the body to music. (a) Jazz-musician’s self reports Well-known jazz musicians report that musical improvisation draws on the body and physical motion in myriad ways and is essential to the production of music (2, 4, 22). Indeed, expressive ability is the key to the creation of rhythm, tempo, and melody as well as instrumental and vocal fluidity. Alongside the quotes below, I have indicated—in brackets—their most central analogies to bodily and physical motion using a scheme I have articulated in (17). That is, analogies to movement, physical qualia, emotions, and cross-modal correspondences. “Certain cultures feel the rhythm on the downbeat more so than the backbeat. I have been brought up in a culture where I feel the backbeat of the rhythm as opposed to the downbeat” (Carmen Lundy, vocalist). [perceptual, enactive] “In order to swing, not just to approximate swing, the rhythm has to come from the body. [When I’m] really swinging, I’m unconsciously moving from side to side or back and forth on the piano bench” (Fred Hersch, piano). [synesthetic] “It’s like dancing; it’s the movement of the body that inspires you to play. You have to pat a foot; you get a different feeling altogether than when you play not patting the foot” (Doc Cheatham, trumpet). [physiognomic] [I] started watching Von Freeman play and tried to imitate his dance, the way he moved and swayed, the way he moved his horn up and down when his phrases went up and down…I was surprised at how much easier playing became when I began to move more correctly” (David Bomberg, saxophonist). [synesthetic] [Most musicians] “talk about playing on three different parts of the beat without making any difference in the overall tempo” (Charles Mingus, bass). [perceptual] “There should be ten, fifteen different kinds of time. There’s a kind of time that has an edge on it for a while and then lays back for a while. Sometimes it rolls over the bar, and sometimes it sits more on the beats…you can set a metronome here and, by playing with an edge or playing behind it or right in the center, you can get all kinds of different feelings” (Fred Hersch, piano). [physiognomic] “You have to practice finding the ideas on your horn, getting there at the same time the idea comes into your head. It’s a matter of developing instant touch. Musicians commonly practice this synchronization even when away from an instrument by making up figures and miming their finger patterns simultaneously. The goal is to achieve such close coordination between the body and the conceptualizing mind as to articulate musical patterns with the ease and directness of speech or any expressive gesture” (Art Farmer, flugelhorn). [perceptual, enactive] “Everything just fell into place in my hands and in my head. I felt I was expressing something with everything I played. When I’m playing well, there’s a certain freedom of just being able to do anything, really” (Kenny Barron, piano). [perceptual] “You have to use body movement with taste, treating it individually with each song as if it were just part of the flow of the song” (Vea Williams, vocalist). [synesthetic] “When I was doing Bud Powell, I found myself with my body at a certain angle at the piano, and having my emotions and attitude be a certain way. [Later when I observed him in performance], I was amazed, because the guy looked just like I would look at the piano when I’d be playing his shit. It wiped me out” (Chick Corea, piano). [physiognomic, synesthetic] “The body keeps the tempo…it helps to be able to dance…any little simple step; it helps your rhythm” (Dizzy Gillespie, trumpet). [perceptual] Musicians rely on [embodied] fingering patterns or the instrument’s physical layout to help them improvise or remember a musical riff (Paul Berliner, ethnomusicologist). [perceptual, enactive] The dance of agile fingers on the keyboard infuses melodic patterns with swing (Paul Berliner, ethnomusicologist). [enactive] (b) Talk-aloud protocols and videotapes As our two beginning jazz improvisers created music on the piano, they talked about the ongoing process with particular attention to how the body, was or was not, infusing their playing. 2NP Ñïàñèáî.  îòëè÷èå îò Ïàíòà ñ âàìè ïðèÿòíî, èíòåðåñíî è ïîëåçíî áåñåäîâàòü. Õîòü êòî-òî ïðèâîäèò àðãóìåíòû â çàùèòó ñâîåé òî÷êè çðåíèÿ! Ñ ëþäüìè, ìíåíèÿ êîòîðûõ âû ïðèâîäèòå, äåéñòâèòåëüíî òðóäíî ïîñïîðèòü. Ðèòì îùóùàåòñÿ âñåì òåëîì (ÿ óæå ïèñàë îá ýòîì, åñëè ïîìíèòå), îïðåäåëåííûå äâèæåíèÿ òåëà äåéñòâèòåëüíî ñâÿçàíû ñ ìóçûêàëüíîé âûðàçèòåëüíîñòüþ. Ýòî ôàêò. Ïðè÷åì ÿ çàìåòèë äâà òèïà ïðîÿâëåíèÿ ýòîé ñâÿçè. Î ïåðâîì ïèøåò Äýâèä Áîìáåðã: êîãäà îí íà÷àë äâèãàòüñÿ êàê Ôðèìàí, åìó ñòàëî ëåã÷å èãðàòü êàê îí. À âòîðîé ìîæíî çàìåòèòü ó ×èêà Êîðèè: îí èãðàë Áàäà Ïàóýëà è çàìåòèë, ÷òî äâèãàåòñÿ êàê îí. Òî åñòü â ïåðâîì ñëó÷àå ïðàâèëüíûå äâèæåíèÿ òåëà ïîìîãàþò ïðàâèëüíî ïîñòðîèòü ìóçûêàëüíóþ ôðàçó. À âî âòîðîì ïðàâèëüíàÿ èãðà ïðèâîäèò ê àíàëîãè÷íûì äâèæåíèÿì òåëà.  ó÷åíèè æå Ïàíòà-Ãîëóáåâà (íàñêîëüêî åãî ìîæíî ïîíÿòü èç îáðûâî÷íûõ ñâåäåíèé, ïðåäîñòàâëÿåìûõ Ïàíòîì) ìåíÿ íàñòîðàæèâàåò â îñíîâíîì òî, ÷òî îíè àáñîëþòèçèðóþò òîëüêî ïåðâûé ñïîñîá ïðîÿâëåíèÿ âçàèìîñâÿçè, íå óäåëÿþò äîëæíîãî âíèìàíèÿ òî÷íîñòè è êîíòðîëþ ñ ïîìîùüþ ìåòðîíîìà (â ïðèâåäåííûõ âàìè öèòàòàõ îá ýòîì òîæå øëà ðå÷ü), à òàêæå íå óäåëÿþò âíèìàíèÿ ïðî÷èì íåîáõîäèìûì ýëåìåíòàì ðèòìè÷íîé èãðû (îá ýòîì ÿ ïèñàë ðàíåå). 2NP Ïðî "êîëîññàëüíîå íåâåæåñòâî" â ïëàíå ðèòìà - ýòî âû çðÿ. Êîíå÷íî, êëàññè÷åñêîå ìóç.îáðàçîâàíèå îáû÷íî ìàëî âíèìàíèÿ óäåëÿëè ýòîìó àñïåêòó. Ýõ, Ïàíò, íàïîìèíàþ âàì ëþáèìîå ïðàâèëî âàøåãî ëþáèìîãî ôîðóìà: "3.3. Ïîìíèòå, ÷òî íà ôîðóìå ïîÿâëÿþòñÿ ëþäè ñ ðàçëè÷íîé ñòåïåíüþ îñâåäîìëåííîñòè â âîïðîñàõ, ñâÿçàííûõ ñ ãîëîñîì. Åñòü ëþäè, êîòîðûå ïðèáëèæàëèñü áëèæå è çàìåòíî áëèæå. "Îäíî äåëî îâëàäåòü ðèòìè÷.ôðàçîé,äðóãîå -îâëàäåòü Time,ïîñòðîåííûì íà íåé." - Òóò òîæå õîòåëîñü áû ïîïîäðîáíåå, ÷òî âû èìååòå ââèäó. Ïðîñòî èç ýòàïîâ âëàäåíèÿ ðèòìîì, êîòîðûå âû ïðèâåëè (ÿ ýòè ýòàïû ïðîõîæó ÷óòü ïî-äðóãîìó), ìíå ïîêàçàëîñü, ÷òî íà ïîñëåäíåì ýòàïå "Èñïîëüçîâàíèå èçó÷åííîãî ðèòìà äëÿ Âàøèõ öåëåé,÷òî äîêàçûâàåò âëàäåíèå ðèòìîì" ïðîèñõîäèò ïðîñòî çàïîìèíàíèå ðèòìà äî àâòîìàòèçìà, ÷òî ïîçâîëÿåò â äàëüíåéøåì ñâîáîäíî èñïîëüçîâàòü åãî â ñîáñòâåííûõ ìóçûêàëüíûõ ïîñòðîåíèÿõ. 2NP Ïðîøó ïðîùåíèÿ, íî ìíå êàæåòñÿ âû ìåíÿ íå ïîíÿëè. Ïðî ïñèõîôèçèîëîãèþ - ÿ ýòî âñå ïîíèìàþ. Âû ïðîñòî ðàñøèôðîâàëè ôðàçó "ïðîèñõîäèò ïðîñòî çàïîìèíàíèå ðèòìà äî àâòîìàòèçìà, ÷òî ïîçâîëÿåò â äàëüíåéøåì ñâîáîäíî èñïîëüçîâàòü åãî â ñîáñòâåííûõ ìóçûêàëüíûõ ïîñòðîåíèÿõ". ß ñïðàøèâàë íå ïðî ïñèõîôèçèîëîãèþ, à ïðî ìóçûêó. ×òî êîíêðåòíî â èãðå ìóçûêàíòà íàòàëêèâàåò âàñ íà ìûñëü î ðàçãðàíè÷åíèè òåõ êòî óìååò "èãðàòü ðèòì" è òåõ êòî åãî "ñîçäàåò".  ÷åì ðàçëè÷èå èìåííî â ïëàíå ìóçûêè? Ñëóøàòåëü âåäü âñå ðàâíî ñëûøèò ìóçûêó, à íå ïñèõîôèçèîëîãè÷åñêèå ïðîöåññû, íå òàê ëè? |

Ïðîñòî â òîì ïðèìåðå, êîòîðûé ÿ ïðèâåë âûøå, ìíå êàæåòñÿ ÷òî áàðàáàíû â çàïèñè âîîáùå ýëåêòðîííûå. Ýëåêòðîííûé áàðàáàíùèê èãðàåò "ñëèøêîì õîðîøî", "ñëèøêîì òî÷íî", ÷òî äëÿ ÷åëîâå÷åñêîãî óõà íå ñîâñåì åñòåñòâåííî è çàìåòíî. Ïîýòîìó ÿ è ïûòàþñü óòî÷íèòü, ÷òî èìåííî âû èìåëè ââèäó ïîä "ñîçäàíèåì ðèòìà" è "èñïîëíåíèåì ðèòìà". È ïîýòîìó æå ñïðàøèâàë î äðóãèõ ìóçûêàíòàõ (îíè èãðàþò â æèâóþ, åñëè íå îøèáàþñü). | |

2NP À êàñòåëüíî ðèòìà è êóëüòóðû, ÿ ïîâòîðþñü, ÷òî ìîæíî îñâîèòü ðèòìèêó íà äîñòîéíîì óðîâíå, íàõîäÿñü â ëþáîì êóëüòóðå, åñëè ÷åòêî ïîíèìàòü ÷åãî è êàê âû õîòèòå äîáèòüñÿ. Ïîçâîëþ ñåáå òàêóþ àíàëîãèþ: âåäü ìîæíî âûó÷èòü èíîñòðàííûé ÿçûê, ìîæíî íàó÷èòüñÿ ãîâîðèòü íà íåì áåç àêöåíòà, äà òàê, ÷òî äàæå íîñèòåëè ÿçûêà íå ñìîãóò îòëè÷èòü (íàïðèìåð, ðàçâåä÷èêîâ ýòîìó óñïåøíî ó÷àò). Áîëåå òîãî, ëþäè ñîâåðøåííî ðàçíûõ êóëüòóð è íàöèé, â òîì ÷èñëå äîñòàòî÷íî ñåâåðíûõ (Øâåöèÿ, íå ãîâîðÿ óæå îá Àíãëèè) ïðåêðàñíî îâëàäåâàþò ðèòìèêîé. Äà, ïîëàãàþ ÷òî ñðåäíåìó áåëîìó àíãëè÷àíèíó ïîíàäîáèòüñÿ áîëüøå óñèëèé è âðåìåíè, ÷òîáû íàó÷èòüñÿ èãðàòü äæàç, ÷åì ñðåäíåìó àôðîàìåðèêàíöó. Íî îí ìîæåò íàó÷èòüñÿ ýòî äåëàòü, ïðè÷åì äàæå ëó÷øå! È ðóññêèå, äóìàþ, íè÷åì íå õóæå. Ïîýòîìó ïðåäëàãàþ âñå-òàêè àáñòðàãèðîâàòüñÿ îò ñîöèàëüíî-êóëüòóðíûõ îñíîâ ðèòìèêè, è õîòÿ áû äëÿ öåëåé äàííîãî îáñóæäåíèÿ ðàññìàòðèâàòü å¸ ëèøü êàê íàâûê, êîòîðûé íåîáõîäèìî îñâîèòü.  íàøåé ñîöèàëüíî êóëüòóðíîé ñðåäå äëÿ áîëüøèíñòâà - ïðàêòè÷åñêè ñ íóëÿ. |

2NP Ïðèìåð ïîíÿòåí. Êðîññ-êóëüòóðíîå îñâîåíèå è ñîåäèíåíèå ðèòìèêè âîçìîæíî, î ÷åì ÿ è ïèñàë âûøå. Íî âñå æå íå ïîíÿòíà ïðàêòè÷åñêàÿ ñòîðîíà êàñàòåëüíî ìåòîäèêè îáó÷åíèÿ ðèòìèêå - â ÷åì îñîáåííîñòè âàøåãî ïîäõîäà ñ ó÷åòîì ñîöèî-êóëüòóðíûõ îñîáåííîñòåé è ò.ï.? È åù¸ îäèí âîïðîñ. Ìàòåðèàë â ïîäàííîì âèäå ãîäèòñÿ äëÿ àìåðèêàíöåâ- ê òàêîìó âûõîäó ÿ ïðèøåë;åñòü âåùè,êîòîðûå äëÿ íèõ íàñòîëüêî åñòåñòâåííû,÷òî îíè äàæå íå îñîçíàþò ýòîãî, íàïðèìåð ïðîñõîæäåíèå ðèòìè÷åñêèõ è àðòèêóëÿöèîííûõ îñîáåííîñòåé îò àíãëèéñêîãî ÿçûêà;è íå ïðîñòî àíãëèéñêîãî,íî â åãî àìåðèêàíñêîé âåðñèè ;è íå ïðîñòî àìåðèêàíñêîé,íî àôðîàìåðèêàíñêîé.
