I am no expert on basses but i think fender actualy did move it to the other side somewhere in the 60's ? Anyway when its put this way you can rest your finger on it and pluck the strings with your thumb. Doesnt cover the thumbrest name i know but it is in the right place for a p-bass i think. |

not a bassist too, but as far as i know, when you playing with your thumb, the thumbrest is under the strings, just like on this bass. if you use your middle and index fingers, the thing should be above the strings. | |

I dont rest my thumb on it either......just my chewing gum..... but I guess you guys are right : the correct verb would be "finger-rest" for this one & a "thumb-rest" would be the right name when its positioned at the upper-side (where F. put in the 70ties) I usually play with a plectrum /flatwound strings & the rubber mute under the bridge cover to get an authentic vintage bass sound .......ballads etc. I play with my thumb for a "softer" sound & thats where the "finger-rest" comes in... |
