Congratulations Patrick on the birth of your new Shamray Custom Shop instrument (serial number CS 0065)!

We will post pictures of it's construction-in-progress from time to time here in this thread.

For the curious, here are the specs on CS 0065:

Construction Method: LP-style, set neck + top, “1959” body template
Material for neck: Mahogany
Neck features: Standard (3-piece laminate) LONG NECK TENON
Neck profile 1959 rounded profile
12 inch fretboard radius
Material for fretboard: Brazilian Rosewood (pre-ban, 50 years old!)
Frets: Sintoms "6100" (medium tall, AKA "Jumbo")
Nut: Bone (from petrified Siberian woolly mammoth)
Fret markers: Perloid Trapezoids ( same as CS-0015)
Fretboard binding: Single-layer cream binding around fretboard only

the Sadler burst was what first got me interested in Shamray, I talked to Wolf McCloud about it and his comment was that is was the best LP he ever played, after a year what is your oppinion of it now?

I think after a year the only thing I would change would be to "lighten up" the neck pickup a bit, it's a bit deep for my taste, but it's made me reconsider how I'd always used the neck position so that's good. I had .013's put on & the sound just floors me - very expressive instrument, capable of real range, with a lot of bite when called for. I couldn't be happier with it. It's funny, most people think that because it's not Gibson and not American or Japanese that the top must be fake - not the case, obviously. As an interesting comparison, I have a premium Tokai Love Rock from the '80's (DiMarzio PAF's and flame maple top) which I had set up identically, and it can't compete with the Shamray, not on workmanship, stability or sound quality - it's like apples and oranges. Haven't played anything like a R8 or R9 Gibson to compare it to, that would be interesting as well.

actually, we would normally use the (more-vintage-looking) "amber" hats on a guitar like this, but if you want the slightly lighter color 'gold' hats, we will use those instead...

I don't know if you have seen this and how it will affect the international patent.
(STEVENSVILLE, MD) June 5, 2006 — Paul Reed Smith Guitars is very pleased to announce that the United States Supreme Court today denied Gibson Guitar's final appeal of a Court of Appeals decision upholding PRS' right to make a single cutaway-style guitar. When first introduced more than six years ago at the NAMM show, the PRS Singlecut® quickly captured the attention of artists and critics, winning awards for its design and quality. Seeking to stop competition to its Les Paul brand single cutaway-style guitar, Gibson moved aggressively, filing a suit in Nashville that asserted trademark infringement. After several years of expensive and drawn-out litigation, the local federal district court judge initially sided with Gibson. That court ordered PRS to stop sales of its Singlecut®. Several companies joined PRS in urging the appellate court--the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit--to reverse the decision. Last year, the Sixth Circuit ruled that an injunction should never have been issued by the lower court. The court observed that Gibson conceded that only "an idiot" would ever confuse a PRS Singlecut® and a Gibson Les Paul. Based on that concession and the overwhelming evidence, the Sixth Circuit found that Gibson's trademark case had no merit and summarily dismissed the suit. The Supreme Court's decision today leaves the Sixth Circuit opinion in place and ends Gibson's multi-year effort to thwart legitimate competition under the guise of intellectual property law.

Paul Reed Smith, the company founder, stated: "I am delighted for our employees, our dealers, our customers and the industry. Well, it just means that the 'PRS singlecut body does not infringe on Gibson's trademark for the 'LP body' (something which anyone with EYES could have seen right from the beginning - since they are clearly distinct and different body shapes!)

But it has no real bearing on the stuff that we do here - making EXACT replicas of Gibson body shapes (and others!) that are currently only under the jurisdiction of AMERICAN trademark law. When those shapes become protected by International trademarks, then we will be required by law to 'cease and desist'!

Sure, at that time we will be able to make "similar but different" bodies, but thats not what many of our clients ask for (for example, yourself...)

this number has a special meaning to me, it is the date that my Father passed away, it was to be done with a ink stamp, Michael decided to suprise me, and this is how it ended up

first thank you Mr. Shamray for continuing to work thru the holidays to try to get this finished,
almost done just need some plastic pieces to finish
also check out the flame thru the tranparent burst

i havent received a tracking number yet, but the fact this thread doesnt have a "light-bulb" anymore indicates that your guitar has SHIPPED! (Shamray always changes the icon when he ships them...)

Will enquire about that when i visit the shop tommorrow...

OK, I recieved the guitar on 8/14/06, I had worked 12hrs the night befor and had 4 hrs sleep, I was like a kid at Christmas, opened the package and all I can say is INCREDIBLE, took some time to just check out fit, finish and overall construction, I had to look very hard to find any thing wrong and all was minor, wrong strap buttons, after talking to Michael I found allparts had sent a partial strap lock kit and a replacement is on the way, neck pickup pole pieces did not line up with strings, just needed to tweak the pickup legs, (also talked to Michael about this and it has been added to the final check list), and the nut was tight on the B string after using some nut sauce that is fine,
The case left a little to be desired, pretty much a hard gig bag, I have a hard shell case on order (something this nice deservers the best) that is pretty much all I could find wrong, now the good stuff, neck profile, I originally spec the neck to be between a 59 and 60 during the build I asked to have it done to 59 spec I could not be happier it just feels great when you have your hand wrapped around it, neck angle, the bridge and tail piece are on the deck, which tells me it could not get any better, tone and sustain, I really don't think you could get any better, all I can say is incredible (I did supply all electronics and pickups, RS historic wiring and switches and WCR pickups) on a 10/10 scale I would give this an 11, we set our expectations and hopes high but to have the exceeded is not very common,
I want to thank Michael for puttig up with me during the build.
Mr. Sergei Sataev for putting his hart and soul into this guitar, I asked Michael at the begining if Sataev could build a Les Paul, I can now say that I don't think anyone could do better
