Congratulations Steve, on the birth of your second Shamray Custom Shop instrument (serial number CS 1954)! For the curious, here are the specs on CS 1954: Detailed specification of Guitar: CS-1954 “DARKBURST” “1954 LP” dimensions - DARKBURST top finish as per client photos (Body Back, Side Of Body, Back of Neck & Headstock to aged dark brown (no red pore filler) / clear lacquer.) Body & neck: Lightweight Honduras mahogany. 1-piece body and 1-piece neck. Exact Neck profile TO BE DECIDED. Long neck tenon.Top wood: Instrument-grade “3-piece” flame maple top (from Customer-supplied top billets) Fretboard: 1950s BRAZILIAN rosewood with “vintage-style” MOP trapezoid inlays, TORTOISE side dots Binding: cream binding-single layer “NIBS” (vintage-style) on fretboard, single-layer on front of body. If you have seen old refin 54's they had three piece tops. That's the way they did it back then, because they were goldtopped. I have the original bookmatched wood for the CS1959 that was warped that wasn't used, and the sister piece of the wood on the CS1959. I will take the bookmatch of the first pieces for the outsides seeing that they weren't thick enough for the middle of the CS1959 and then one of the sister pieces for the middle. The other half of the sister piece can go to anyone who wants a great looking top for a PRS or Tele. I will take a breath now!!!

On P-90s, make your decision carefully. Whilst the Lollars are supposed to be really good, consider that they are constructed in a totally different manner to 'regular p-90s'. So if you are after full blown vintage p-90 tone, you may have to look elsewhere. I honestly can't see any reason why anyone would not order a set from Wolfe. I think he is absolutely at the top of his game, plus he is alot cheaper than many others... | |

Jason is actually a friend of mine, he has fixed and wound about 6 sets of pickups for me. His strat pickups are unbelievable. I will look into Wolfes. Thanks for the suggestion Jon. All types I will consider. | |

This is a 54 conversion a gentleman is selling on Ebay and has a three piece top. I like it but would want it a darker burst. But is cool.

Yeah all the control cavities are through the Mahogony. In some cases the control cavity is carved out after the maple top is put on. The earlier Les Pauls were done this way. If you go on the LPF and look on some post you will see some examples. It's a really good learning experience on the LPF.

Other than the pictures that are posted I don't think there is anything new. Hey I just bought a 52 les Paul Gold Top from ebay. It will probably make it's way to ShamRay for some repairs. Minor one's but need to be done. Thanks for the understanding. I am going to use real 54 tuners for this guitar. Using pigtail wraparound for the bridge. Haven't figured out the pickup thing. | |

Sure, supposedly it belonged to a farmer in New York State in the town of Binghamton. After he died the family had an estate auction to settle the money between families. The grandson wanted to sell it for 200.00 yes 200.00. The mom which is the farmers daughter told the son no we should get at least 1500.00. I wish I was at that auction. Well a man that cleans out auctions buy buying most of their stuff for a lower price bought the guitar. Well I did not pay that little. The strings have not been changed since the 60's. A few mod's have been done back then. A B3 bigsby was added which does not get screwed in the top of the body, and the trapeze bridge part was reversed and screwed to the existing holes. The neck has a bow form the string tension over 40 years. The headstock had a crack but is not in an area that affects the upper neck. Frets are perfect as well as the fret board. I will post a pic. Michael that Mahogony looks like it's 50 years old. All the new cut stuff looks reall white color. Hey I definitely want that grainy look to the back and the neck. Did they put fullerplast on the wood before they did the 58-60 Burst. I think it would look reall cool with the dark grain lines on the mahogony.

"grainy" look you see on the body is just the first sealer coat of lacquer, not fully sanded off yet. The neck hasnt yet been fine sanded, nor received a sealer coat... Old bursts didnt get sealed with fullerplast, they just got a liberal smearing with "gibson red pore filler"... If you want pore filler on this one, please let me know ASAP! |

thats not what I meant, I know the wood of the neck and body is not finished yet. I am saying that I want a grainy look as opposed to a shiny epoxy look. What ever you think is correct go with it. Some of the Tokai and greco's I have, have that epoxy look. That's all not trying to make it difficult. Thanks Michael | |

Jon, have a look at Maple Leaf Hardwoods (www.curlymaple.com), there's usually a few pieces of nice flame maple available from them. If you want quilts I've seen some very nice ones from Buzzsaw International Hardwoods on e-bay. I know Shamray's bought pieces from both companies on occasions. It was actually Michael who suggested them to me when I was looking for wood for CS-0057. | |

Yeah, I have played through a few old gibson amps. One of them was really old, maybe the 60's or early 70's. Not quite that old though!I find even teh "beat up" appearance of the amp gives it character, so if the tone is incredable as well, I would say you have a pretty nice amp there. | |

The problem right now is that there is no-one here to COMPLETE the guitars  Our completing guy (who was badly injured in a fall last month) is back at home nursing his sore back again, and Stepanov (who usually covers for him) has been off sick himself the past couple of days. I'm hoping at least one of them will be back at work THURSDAY ( after the holiday)... |

I dont know... Stepanov has been ill for several days.. so i havent been able to get an "crafter timeline" updates. It should be ready to test this week.. An updated shipping schedule is up in the air until Stepanov gets back to work.. but tentatively its 4th or 5th on the shipping list right now. I hope to get an update of status for ALL PROJECTS before friday | |

STATUS REPORT: No news, and no visible progress in the last two weeks. Stepanov is still at home ill (very ill) so i cant get any real information on completing status. EVERYTHING that was in the completing room LAST friday is still sitting there... it seems that unless Stepanov our shop manager is physically in the building whipping the crafters, that little or nothing important gets done. If Stepanov is well enough to come to work next MONDAY, then we should be able to get all projects back on track by the middle of next week. It looks like Mr. Shamray just doesnt care enough about his shop to keep things "going" while Stepanov was at home ill.

Michael could you test play this on your own amp before it's packed. Please!!! Also I never got the Russian caps for the CS1959 they used the RSGuitarworks caps and they suck. Thanks for the update. Well, i got to play it today, and WOW is it ever NICE. I think it sounds even BETTER than CS-1959! Maybe its just the P90s talking, but it simply sounds 'unbeatable' to my ears. And it feels great too! I think Maxim has really outdone himself this time. As of today, all it lacks are strap buttons, and the SKB case isnt in the shop yet. But it should be ready to pack just as soon as the case arrives (its maybe 5 minutes work installing the strap buttons...) I sat down with Shamray for the past hour or so, and we ran down the list of all 14 (!!!) overdue guitars, and right now CS-1954 sits at #6 on the shipping list (tenative ship date: April 17th) But depending on how things go with a couple of the other guitars that are higher up the list (Shamray hasnt constructed a full timeline yet) its possible it could "bump" up a place or two, and ship out a week earlier. I expect the details will become clear over the next week.... |

That makes me happy you like it. The fact you like p90's is why I wanted your opinion of this guitar. I sure Maxim has outdone him self. Thank you for the great update. I about to start restoring another 52 LP. I stripped it two weeks ago, it had a terrible Dark burst Nitro that was so thick it was sticky. So I stripped dried and put back to play, man what a difference in tone and sustain. | |||

Alex, thank you for the speedy shipment process, I have really enjoyed the building process of both CS1959, and CS1954. The CS1959 is a hell of a player and sounds even better, I actually played out three times this week with her, very dependable. Please I beg you, The Company Shamray and employees, Luthiers etc... are an incredible thing you have going on, make sure that all your customers are happy and taken care of. My point you have probably the best guitar making Shop in the world and you can't afford any mistakes, or slow progress. Your employees are of the most gifted builders I have ever seen. I have been playing her the last few days and can'y put her down. I can't believe how light the guiar is. My 1955 GA15 and this guitar is a match in heaven. When I roll off on the volume on the bridge pickup man doe it get the Duane tone. Use the Bridge pickup and get the Clapton Bluesbreaker tone. I brought the guitar to my friend who is an accoustic builder and guitar repair guy and he couldn't believe how ell made the guitar is and how the top carve is dead on. He didn't even want to play it because he just wanted to hear her. Sweat sounding guitar. Maxim you really are the man. Michael thanks again. | |
