"afterburner' ( model AB) is similar to PA-2 preamp.

the difference is, instead of a switch, the unit piggybacks on a pot ( pull-pot engages the boost function - the gain is preset based on the pot rotation )

Its basically a linear gain boost module, adjustable from unity gain to 20 dB

details are here:  http://emginc.com/downloads/wiringdiagrams/EMG-AB.pdf

Woohoo I'm on it I'm on it! *jumps up and down as a little
girl*

The headstock logo is indeed still a bit of a glur, Ive been
considering names, colours, finishes...

The name should suggest elegance yet a hint of the
macabre. Preferably feminine by aftertaste. Let's face it,
guitars are females ;)

Working names:

Le†he
Nepenthe
Ophelia
Lenore

Devia? Not that bad.
I was thinking, did you ever put a logo on the back of the
guitar body? Can it be laquered on or sth more rugged?
Would be fancy to have a big f.ex. scarlet logo on the
back...
Would this add much to the pricetag?

yes, we have painted logos on the back of guitars before. It would go on just over the color coat, but under the lacquer clearcoats. Would be just as rugged as the finish... but if all of your guitars have buckle-rash carved into the bare wood, then it would suffer the same fate :)

cost depends on the exact size and complexity of the design.. could be $50, could be $150 - it all depends!

(send me a sketch, i can get you a quote from our logo artist - she returns from her summer holidays next week...)

im sure this would add quite a bit to the cost but could an design on the back be inlayed (ie in MOP [id expect expensive] or white plastic) wouldnt that be very tough, but id expect a hefty pricetag on crafting and materials

I'd like the back/neckthrough style to be similar to that
Beastlike King V you unleashed a while back, looks very
ergonomic and rounded to me. Also, I have the feeling that
a non US Rhoads is quite thick and unhandy, I'd prefer it to
be a bit more rounded and ergonomic at the back so it
doesn't scrape my ribs all the time ;-)

Dear Michael & rest, I am right now in vast doubt, maybe I
do want it to be a 7 string after all... It was 150$ more,
right?

I am just wondering about the ergonomy of a 7 string RR, if
it would feel even weirder. It would enable me to play all
our old songs as well though... Hmmhhh... Any tips
welcome, I'm puzzled :-/

yes thats right... but you need to decide FAST  (it may already be too late, if they have selected your wood...)

We'd need to make a 7-string variant of that headstock, but thats not hard :)

Âðåìÿ: 11.08.2005 03:57

Does the extra charge include the pickup (707) and other
bridge? Is the bridge heavy duty, for extreme tremolo work?
Àâòîð

Âðåìÿ: 11.08.2005 11:49
Ìîñêâà

yes, thats the cost of the 'whole upgrade'... extra wood, extra work, extra string, extra tuner, bridge & pickup upgrade.

You really need to define what you mean by "extreme" tremolo work - all tremelos are designed to swing back and forth over a finite range of motion... ibut ts how violently you swing them that is the deciding factor on how long they will last :)

Òåìà: Re: CS 0081 - Shamray Custom Shop 'BRAM CUSTOM” for Bram Van Cauter (Belgium)
Âðåìÿ: 11.08.2005 15:09

Hehehe Well one of the things I dislike about my Universe is
the fact that the tremolo doesn't "swing" as easy, guess
that's just the tension of that extra string that makes it less
easy to manipulate.
With extreme tremolo I don't mean tearing it up liuke Slayer
sometimes does, more Vai-Like tremolo work: using a lot of
natural harmonics and being able to manipulate those and
pitch them up and down with the trem.

What is the estimated work start and time and shipping
time? You said something about "it 'll be in your hands by
the end of october)?

So when do I have to decide to go seven string?

The 707 seems to sound good, and Jeff Loomis (Nevermore)
uses them so can't really go wrong.

If I'd opt for a seven string prolly all specs would be the
same and extra's, but with a 707 of course and probably the
neck profile (neck itself) of a UNIVERSE Ibanez combined
with a Jackson: a tiny bit more rounded on the topNeck
surface I'd like Jackson like: sleek, fast and black

The entire neck should of course be black.

What are my options for the spc and the Afterburner, lay-
out wise (any tips?) are both of them pots? Can they be
switches too?
Do you havce good experiences with them?
Do they feed off the 9V battery of the EMG81 or do they
need a seperate energy unit?

SPC has to be a pot.. afterburner could be a pot OR a switch (if its a switch - then you preset the gain on a trimpot INSIDE the guitar )
This is generally the most convenient way... a preset gain boost at the flick of your switch is very handy.

Its possible for us to mod it a bit so you can have both the gain pot and a separate switch... but then you always have to worry about whether the pot is sitting where you think it is - when you hit that switch!

i have used both circuits, and they work GREAT! (EMG active circuits are truly state-of-the-art)

You can run all of them off the same battery :)

Ok you'll have the headstock artwork and pot layout tonight
or tomorrow morning.
There is a chance the SPC won't have to be installed since a
lot of people tell me this is overkill and doesn't add much to
the tone.
Estimated 3 weeks of finishing? That's great!

Btw, please warn me before they start to paint the thing, I
might just want black laquer without the white edge, more

Wow, i simply dont understand the shipping delays in Moscow. I think Michael once said that because of the terrorist attacks they could only ship one guitar a week or so. How would the post office know how many items a person has shipped if they go on different days or different post offices? second, if there is such a delay, why don't you get every luthier in the show to ship a guitar a week (or however many guitars are ready). Third, if shipping from Russia is so pathetic, why dont you travel to one of the Baltic States with much better economies and postal systems and get the damn things out. People shouldn't have to wait 2 months for a finished product.

I will try to explain it as best i can!

Delays in this particular case are twofold... One, we currently have a huge BACKLOG of guitars to ship, (CS-0081 is FIFTEENTH IN LINE!) and secondly - the entire COUNTRY is closed from Dec 31st to January 10th, for the annual drinking party.

But in general, "the shipping problem" is a complex situation - the bureaucracy in Russia is many layers deep, and all of them are geared towards creating bribes for civil servants!

Actually, we don't ship via the post office, we ship via EMS air courier. (The Russian post office doesnt guarantee delivery times!)

In general, the current difficulty is that no matter how many different people SHIP, via how many different carriers - they all end up being processed in the exact same Customs office, which is already well aware of the popular tactic of companies shipping under multiple identities.

Travelling outside of Russia is a silly concept... FIRST, we are 1000 km from the nearest border, and then we would have to deal with THREE different customs offices (leaving russia, entering the 2nd country, exporting from the second country). If you want to add $1000 to your shipping cost, thats an excellent way to do it!

A little extra effort is required to get past the big backlog (which was partially caused by us getting about a dozen orders in one week, and partially caused by Mr. Shamray being lazy, and simply not doing his job for a month or so!) But its likely going to take a change of management in our shop, (including an immediate cash infusion of about $20,000 to buy us an export licence) - coupled with some serious changes in Russian legislation, to fully "normalize" shipping to the standard enjoyed in civilized countries. So we just have to plan on 1-3 weeks "shipping queue" for the forseeable future. (In fact, as of October, I have been informing all clients of that situation up-front - before they place their order...)

In the meantime... if someone really wants to get their guitar shipped the same day its finished, i can take it to FedEx - who will charge $800 to ship, plus another $1200 to "expedite" (bribe) it through customs immediately. Or probably we could have Stepanov hand-deliver it for about the same cost (he enjoys travelling...)

For the fed ex price it would be cheaper for me to fly to moscow, pick it up, go on a mini vacation and bring it home myself. I was about to order a guitar next month, but I'll have to think about it now (unless it could be done by next june, in which case I quite possible could make the trip to moscow and pick it up myself since im in the neighbourhood).

At last!!

Btw, about the strings: what brand do you put on? I'd like a 0.58 gauge for the thick string and then the LTHB set without the high E string (considering it's a 6 string guitar)

Thanks!

Send it asap please, I want to lay my hands on it... Hope it won't be 2 more months or so, lots of gigs ahead where I want to show off ;-)

thanks!

Hey,

Tuning in B, please: BEADF#B

String gauge:

B 0.58
E 0.46
A 0.36
D 0.26
F# 0.17
B 0.12

Something like this, I presume... Don't forget the clicking Jack input. Thx!

not having an SPC control ruins the joy of a new instrument? You must get disappointed easily, trying have a guitar built in the wrong scale like ol Jonas, or anyone who;s bought a guitar from somewhere and have it shipped to them only to find the neck has been crushed and snapped. Suddenly, not having the SPC in russia for a while isnt such a big deal. haha :p

well, i agree it SUCKS to have to wait... Mr. Shamray was 'supposed' to have purchased all of these parts A LONG TIME AGO.

Just another example of his pathetically bad management style - I have been telling him for TWO YEARS now that there is no excuse for not securing the parts RIGHT AWAY.

He should know better than to trust anything that our pathetic excuse for a Russian EMG distributor tells him - they never ever come through with what we order.

the 89 is now at the shop, and Stepanov says that Shamray claims he knows where there is an SPC available locally... however, this contradicts what the EMG distributor told Stepanov yesterday: "there are none in Moscow".

if nothing turns up by tommorrow, we will have to bring one over from USA...
