The difference is noticeable going from 9v to 18v, even on guitar. But it's even more remarkable on bass pickups. However, even EMG says the jump from 18v to 27v (the maximum) is negligible.

from what i noticed when i went from 9v to 18v in my ibanez it became a sharper more attacking sound on my EMG 81 and the 85 never seemed to change to much but i never used it that much before the mod anyway, im not great at describing tone but im going with a 9v setup on my custom to have a change in tone and also the mahogany should make a smoother guitar as a whole.

sorry if this makes no sence but im not the most descriptive of people

Nice description, Gary. Thanks for the insight.

I am dropping the separate battery boxes (batteries will be in the control cavity), so that I won't lose so much body wood to the router. With the 18v EMG setup, the batteries should last a long time, so there is no real need for a quick access battery box.

Work should commence this week, as I understand. I've got my fingers crossed!

@ Bill: dude; did you say that in dutch?? i am reading that at 2

mean...sometimes its indeed ugly, sometimes very cool. on a
PRS singlecut it looks cool.

oh, by the way; its " gesproken" not" gesprecht". the latter is
german. but two thumbs up on your dutch!

Gary, I agree that the PRS wraparound bridge is more clean looking, but you can't intonate the guitar accurately enough with their static design, in my opinion. It's pretty close, but I notice the difference.

I know they are also now making wraparound tune-o-matics, but I don't think they stay in tune as well as a 2 piece bridge/tailpiece does.

Nimrod,

Waar komt u vandaan?

Translation: my Dutch is pretty rusty.

ah, no, its quite nice actually. better than most people here
actually. well, bill comes from william, and the dutch version of
william is....willem :P

I am from the hague...(in dutch: den haag)

and just for fun: hep=heb gewonden=gewoond (gewonden is
something like, the woonded, or past tense of winden, which
means: winding). but thats just nitpicking, your dutch is overall
quite good :)

may I ask why you were in holland?

Michael, I am wondering about the knots on the top piece of the body. I know this will be an opaque finish, but how does the crafter smooth out a wood knot to prep it for such a fine finish?

the 'knots' in our russian alder are 'pigmentation' only, they are integral to the wood and dont present any difficulties in finishing...

Ok Michael, thanks for clarifying. I couldn't really tell from the pictures how extensive the knots were. I was just wondering how you would go about filling in a knot so it would be smooth before finishing. Looks like you don't have to worry about that!

One technical question: for an opaque-colored guitar, why do you bother putting a top on it? Wouldn't it be easier to just start with a thicker piece of wood, and then carve and finish it?

if you're looking for better tuning stability, how about TonePros Locking Bridge and Locking Tuners...

a separate top is frequently used when a thicker piece of wood is not readily available!

About tuning stability: Locking tuners can 'help', but if you arent lazy, you can achieve the exact same effect with 'normal' tuners, just by using the "inside-outside-pinch-lock" method of stringing ( which locks the string before there is one full wrap around the post).

BTW, Tonepros hardware actually does not do ANYTHING 'to improve tuning stability'... the only thing i can recommend it for is that your bridge and tailpiece wont fall off when you change all the strings. Everything else that is 'claimed for it' is SHEER HYPE - Tonepros is nothing more than regular Gotoh hardware that has a couple holes drilled in it! We have installed lots of it here ( in fact, i even have a Tonepros locking bridge and tailpiece on one of my OWN guitars) and the truth is - it doesnt do anything 'magical'... :)

i have locking tuners on a strat, and normal tuners on the les
paul. i can say; the normal tuners work MUCH easier than
locking ones. you have to unlock it first, fiddle out the last piece
of the string, then fiddle the string IN the tunerpeg...damn. with
normal tuners i change strings in 3 minutes, with locking tuners,
i have to schedule it; " 15:00 pm til 15:30; string changing" it
really is les easy. IMO that is.

Michael, I had heard the same thing, that TonePros was just a marketing gimmick. Gimmick = $100 more!

Nimrod, I agree - locking tuners can be more difficult when stringing. I do A LOT of bends when I play, so I'm hoping the locking tuners will assist me, at least a little, in the area of tuning.

hm. okayy....

well, may I post my "experiences" here concerning locking
tuners and regular?

as far as i know, my locking tuners didn't help sh*t with tuning
stability! my strat is less tuning-stable then my les paul, who
has normal tuners. perhaps i need a new bridge, but as far as i
know, it is just a gimmick, and it didnt do a thing for me....

well, thats just me. dont know what you already know ofcourse.

Nimrod - goed om u te zien (of horen)!

I have EMGs in my PRS singlecut. They have many great characteristics, but one of the advantages is they are very QUIET. At the same time, when overdriven, they can create some really great, controllable feedback. I play a mix of blues rock and metallica/creed sounds (no nu metal) and they work great for me.

And you are right. ZW is a rather one dimensional example of the range of a pair of 85/81s.

@ Bill:

this topic is one of the few i very frequently visit. i like the idea
of this guitar. perhaps i am gonna use it for a project of my own.

back to pickups:

for bluesrock I have a VERY nice strat, and on my amp that thing
is very much like the brian may sound. but my les paul...it has a
lack of so many things. the overall feel is great, but the sound of
the pickups sucks.

i want the pickups to have this:

they MUST pick up pinch harmonics PERFECTLY. i know i can
play them well, cause on other guitars, including the strat, i get
great results.

i want them to have a really meaty sound, with a lot of balls.
they have to be mindblowing

and yeah, sometimes they have to have a nice clean sound for
some songs. but thats not priority number one...

are those pickups EMG's?

Phil,

I won't buy another guitar unless it has direct mounted pickups. I don't know why they aren't all made that way. The difference to me is noticeable.

I checked out your Scanlan Custom thread again - that guitar is looking GOOD! I can't wait to see it once it has the lacquer finish on it. Congrats, man.

Nimrod, i have EMGs in every other guitar i have. I have a Dean ML Phantom setneck, 81/60 combo, the 60 is great for clean tones obviously, and the 81 for me produces the right amount of bite, balls and clean distortion. Like its an articulate pickup. People will comment on its lack of dynamics, however i believe all high output pickups have a lack of dynamics in relation to your picking style. But this is only noticable when using your crunch channel. When you switch to your clean and start picking really lightly it has all the dynamics you need, incredible. EMG's arent for all, but for me in my current area of playing (hard rock, metal etc) they work. Even when i roll my gain down considerably on my crunch channel and up the volume, switch to the 60, its such a smooth bluesy sound, most people who use emg's only really use them for their high output characteristics. My other guitars, two dimebag darrell washburn signatures have the 89/81 combo, the different woods certainly present a different tone (contrary to popular belief that emg's kill all wood tones) Emgs do sound alike, but your woods do make the difference. My Dean has mahogany everything, set neck, rosewood board. Where my washburns are alder bodies, maple tops, maple necks and rosewood board. The washburns have a sorta girthier, smooth, round distortion, where my mahogany dean has a sharp but dark crunch. Its a cool comparison.

Bill thanks for the kind words, i truly cant wait for my guitar, as im sure you cant either.

phil, thanks for the review. i will have to think hard on which
pickup i will use.... afterall, my les paul is quite old.....and to
open and close it once a year to change the battery wont do
much good to the wood i guess....

Nimrod I had EMG 81's in my Navigator Japan Custom Les Paul and I loved them.  They could crank out really great distortion, and awesome clean tones.  I put Lindy Fralins in the guitar and didn't like them so I put back the EMG's.
Talk about long Tennon Bill.  Bigger than Long John Silver and John Holmes.  A little porn humor.  Guitar will be interesting with all alder Bill.

Nimrod, here are the specs:

Neck Measurement: 1st fret - 22 mm; 12th - 24.4 mm; D-shaped - like modern Fender, modern (post-60) Gibsons.

Regarding the EMGs, you have given them the only real test that matters, and that is your ears. I just hope you were playing them through a good amp to get a really good feel for them. Oh well, different strokes for different folks ;)

that looks good to me! The neck-body joint already has a 'vaccum-seal' fit (you can pick up the guitar and wave it around - it doesnt budge!) but that screw layout looks ideal for optimal neck stability :-)

With six neck screws, it should be a pretty tight joint fit!

Here's the boost switch installed. Michael is currently designing a high-tech boost receiver involving parabolic mirrors and a squirrel cage fan. It's complicated, but it should be de-classified within a few days. :)

Sorry to take so long to report :(

The Bird of Prey arrived about a month ago. It plays beautifully. The neck is smooth and fast. and the 18v EMG setup is very nice. It's amazing how much more flexibility the EMGs give me using my PODxt Pro. These two were definitely made for each other. And the 20dB boost switch works just like it should. The white finish with the all black hardware is definitely cool.

The inlays look even better than in the pictures. They are really incredible. I'll post a few pics when I get a minute.

The only problem was an issue with the paint (white does tend to show everything), but after talking with Michael, Mr. Shamray is going to make that right. I'll keep you all posted on it as it progresses.

Hi Matt, it was just a little overspray. It would probably not even have been noticeable on anything but an all-white guitar.

Ah I see, well it certainly was good of Shamray to take it back; not that there was any other option, that is what SHOULD have been done, but I doubt Jackson or Gibson would have done the same. So it is good to see that Shamray stands beside its customers.
