Congratulations Ben, on the birth of your new Shamray Custom Shop instrument (serial number CS 0059)! For the curious, here are the specs on CS 0059: LPStandard “1959 Burst” dimensions - Faded Cherry/TeaBurst finish as per BOTB “9-1901”
Hardware: nickel tune-o-matic (ABR) bridge & nickel ALUMINUM tailpiece, nickel “vintage-style” Kluson machine heads. Nickel strap buttons. Cream plastic pickup rings, cream rectangular jackplate, cream toggle washer, matte black plastic control cavity covers, and cream "LP" pickguard. Aged (vintage amber) toggle switch top. |

This guitar should be closer to an original '59 than any "reissue". R9s are simply copies themselves, and not entirely accurate ones either. I'm hoping this guitar will get me as close as possible to a NOS '59 (but of course without the "G" word on the headstock)

Ben, I agree. its very nice. but the fingerboard has to be a bit darker michael, does brazilian rosewood sound different from normal indian/rio rosewood? or feel...? |

no, "Brazilian' rosewood doesnt sound or feel any different. Oftentimes it doesnt even LOOK any different, although most of it does have characteristic orange/yellow stripes alternating with black veins. I have seen about ten different shades so far, ranging from almost black, to very pale. Its been prized over the years for its dramatic figureing, though it got a lot of use in the early part of the last century simply because it was cheap, readily available, and easily exploited (to the point where it was nearly EXTINCT, and harvesting for export was banned ) |

ok.... well, i prefer rare old wood in my guitars too. but only some nice mahogony and nice maple. i don't care too much about old rosewood. but i do care about old mahogony, strange twist in my mind, perhaps (very likely ) but i do like it....dont know why. |

There is debate whether a braz board has any sonic difference to Indian, with strong opinions on either side of the argument (I guess we know where Michael stands  ). I don't know anyone who has taken their fretboard off and replaced it with the other to document the difference! The major reason people use it on replica guitars is that it is vinage correct.Brazilian has a distinctive smell to it, and the braz-equipped guitars I've played have a waxy feel that indian rosewood doesn't have. They are very difficult to distunguish from each other -- the pores on braz tend to be longer than indian, but it can be tricky. Colour is too varied to be reliable. |

Ben your LP is looking awesome. Really like the color. The brazillian will sound different because of the type of oil that occurs in it natuarally. The density is also different. Age and how it was stored too. I know a guy who sells a boatload of Real deal Braz thats 50 plus old and there is not much he doesn't know about fingerboards. www.colonialtonewoods.com His name is Steve Roberson great person to deal with. | |

The board will darken up with oil and from the finger sweat. Your finger board looks great don't sweat it. I am 41 and was not able to see a real 58-59 when new. I would imagine that all the fingerbaords like Michael said come in mant different colors and darknesses. Steve Deals in very huge quantities so the price would be a lot different. Again he deals in just wood supplies. A guitar maker does not have the liberty to have 1000 Braz boards laying around. People got to get paid. | |

Reds are notoriously difficult to capture accurately on digital camera. The LP Jr they made for me looks nothing like it does on the pics here, but in a good way. I wouldnt worry if you don't like what you see, the guys know their finishes. | |

Agreed ! Any guitar will look a heck of a lot better in real then it does on the pictures, specialy the ones taken in the yellowish shop light. So if you like what you see now you are gonna love what you see when you open ur case

Nimrod, Yes I very much like the colour of the guitar. My concern was that the natural light used in the "orange" pic was representative of the true colour of the finish. Out of all the pics Michael has sent me, only one has been orange, so I assume that it's simply an anomaly. Olav - Great to hear from you! As Michael stated earlier, it is tentatively scheduled to ship on Sept.15 Right now, the back of the headstock is being corrected to how I originally specified -- having the serial number "ink stamped" on like yours, Steve. As Petty said, the waiting is the hardest part. I'd really like to have a pic of the two of our sister guitars together after they are completed! |

Nimrod, The Shamray logo and serial number style were incorrect, and so are being changed to how I originally specified. Michael has informed me that the correction is finished, and now I'm patiently waiting for more pics and updates .

okay. hmm..well hope to see it finished quite soon! oh...and i am thinkin about a shamray for mine (superstrat kinda thing, with les paul traits)....perhaps i will use your les paul's color as a base for "my" superstrat with ofcourse zebrahumbuckers and nickel hardware

haha, thanks ben but i like so many colors and guitars, BUT as long as they are simple. a simple burst, like yours, or like the one i will post in a few secs, or like lucians les paul, or just black. like it all, but not the PRS kinda tops and colors... www.janakkerman.nl you won't be able to read it i think. but his les paul is quite remarkable. it used to be an old les paul personal, but it got wrecked, and a dutch luthier reconstructed it to be jan's personal friend, so to speak. i really like this color. |

Pics coming this afternoon... I just called Stepanov and he said its already been completed, so play-testing will happen this afternoon as well. He says the plan is still to ship Saturday, assuming Shamray brings us the case for it (he is supposed to be picking one up today...) |

Well, its just "The Luck Of The Irish", I'm afraid. They had already started completing work, when Stepanov suddenly noticed that in a certain light, at a certain angle, you could see the faint outline of the lacquer work around the 'back of headstock logo'. Changing that logo has proven VERY problematic, and unfortunately its got to go back for further lacquer work TOMORROW. I will email you some pics shortly! |
