Congratulations Spike, on the birth of your new Shamray Custom Shop guitar (Serial number CS 0013)!
We will post pictures of it's construction-in-progress from time to time here in this thread.
For the curious, here are the specs on CS 0013:
Detailed specification of Guitar: CS-0013 SILVERBURST LP
Based on Replica of 1980 Gibson Les Paul "silverburst" - finish color on Body Top, Body Back, Side Of Body, Back of Neck and Headstock in Greened (faded) silver-grey burst color. Black headstock facing with “split-diamond” pearl inlay.
- Body: mahogany, wood will be selected to provide for authentic "1980s" LP-Custom weight (HEAVY!)
- Top wood: 2-piece plain maple top
- Neck: Mahogany with veloute. Long neck tenon. Usual 1980 silverburst neck profile
- Fretboard: Ebony with pearl block inlays, - 22 Sintoms Medium Jumbo frets, Bone nut
- Binding: LP Custom style binding- single layer on fretboard, multi-layer on headstock , multi-layer on front and back of body.
- Hardware: Chrome Gotoh tune-o-matic bridge & tailpiece, Chrome Gotoh ‘metal keystone’ machine heads. Chrome Strap Buttons.
- Black plastic pickup rings, Black plastic control cavity covers & jackplate, no pickguard. Strings - Ernie Ball 010- 046
- Electronics: Large 500K pots, US-made switch & jack - usual LP Custom wiring; toggle switch, 2 volume, 2 tone.
- Knobs: 4 plastic "gibson speed knobs" (black)
- Pickups: Chernishev's custom hand-wound pickups (made to 1980 silverburst specs) with no covers (black bobbins)
- Case: molded plastic flight case
- Notes: Silverburst finish - includes bursting front, back, sides of body, neck, and headstock sides and back.
- Finish color to be aged Silverburst with “medium-greening” (not yellow or pale gold!) as per customers best example photos.

I dont think anybody gets tired of building Silverbursts, they are rather interesting 'deluxe' guitars that require a lot of care to build. I certainly don't get tired of watching them as they get built!

Daniel.. it's only the third, and Matt's looks like is has some pretty crazy customisation going on! The finish on this is (hopefully!) going to be somewhat different... I'm going for a permanent state of very slight greening.
Michael, about the pickups... is there something that has the bassiness and vintage sound of the original pickups, but with the slightly more aggressive sound of a Seymour Duncan JB in the bridge and something pretty jazzy in the neck? Still Chernishev custom wound, of course...

Spike: we could ask Chernishev to rewind the bridge pup a little hotter, which would make it sound a little louder and darker. For the neck position, you wont find anything more "jazzy" than the stock "1980" humbucker. Really, I'd suggest you try both pickups 'as nature intended'... they are a very serendipitous combination in this model.

Hey Michael,
When you get back, can I switch back to having straplocks? I bought one of those locking straps that I plan to use on this guitar... and my current guitar fell off within 2 hours

Straplocks will be no problem! Only two more days here in Thailand... then its back to Moscow snowdrifts

Michael - what type of straplocks do you use? Can they not be the big, obvious ones, but instead ones that look almost exactly like normal strap buttons? I don't like the big bulbous thing on this... http://www.shamray.ru/gallery/pic/lpstu1.jpg

It could be Dunlop Strap-Locks, but we have to ask our local Dunlop's distributor.

Is that the old neck or the new one? If it's the new one, then fine,
but the if the new neck is being built can I request a more
"Gibson" font for it, instead of the funky lettering?

Still waiting to hear about the inlay... I asked if they could change it to the more 'traditional' Shamray script logo. I think our logo artist might be a bit sad that nobody seems to like her latest "modern" Shamray logo design... (I like it, personally!)

There is nothing wrong with the modern logo - however, as this
is meant to be a '79 Silverburst, I don't think that it suits the
character of the guitar. If I were ordering a guitar which was
more "modern" (in terms of body shape etc.) then I would have
no problems with the logo. If it is too much of a hassle to
change it, then don't worry, but I would prefer a more traditional
logo.
Also, just to chip in my (amateur!) opinion - I study letter forms
and fonts a lot, due to my interest in street art and graffiti. The
logo follows what is known as a "Euro" style - unorthodox stroke
widths (it looks like it's been written by a chisel tip held to make
wide strokes on a sidestroke, and not on a downstroke as in
traditional letterforms) and slight distortion of the "traditional"
letter forms (for example the S). This gives a more "modern"
look, as it deviates from the accepted norms of calligraphy.
While this would be fine on a more modern guitar, I would
recommend that you keep a traditional alternative for any guitar
that is meant to be slightly older (Les Pauls, Strat/Telecasters
especially!) Although I am not trying to fool anyone about the
age of my guitar, I would like my guitar to look just like a "real"
Silverburst, except that it is probably built better, looks better
and plays better than the real thing (and, of course, says
Shamray on the headstock!). Cheers,

I think the new logo looks fantastic!!! I would even change the diamond inlay to something more modern to match it as well. Tell your inlay artist she did nice work!!!!

It doesnt show up too well in the pictures, but I chose a slightly
darker silver tint that should look really nice.
