Here is the care overview for our unfinished necks (both maple & rosewood): >1) To clean and nourish the back of the neck and fretboard: use a high-grade of lemon oil (Ernie Ball Wonder Wipes). If the neck is very dirty, try Murphy's Oil Soap diluted 3:1. Some players have found that using a toothbrush for cleaning is very effective. > >2) To condition, maintain, & seal the neck (and prevent it from getting dirtier): A very infrequent dose of gunstock oil and wax (approximately 1 time a year) will help; we recommend Birchwood-Casey Tru-Oil, but any good quality gunstock oil and wax will work. Here is the step by step procedure: >-> After cleaning the neck first with the lemon oil, use a small amount of Tru-oil on the back of the neck & fretboard. Leave it on for only 30 seconds , then wipe it off with a paper towel. Then apply Birchwood-Casey Gunstock Wax; this helps to seal in the Tru-oil. Be sure to douse the paper towel with water before disposing of it! Read the wax and oil manufacturer's instructions regarding disposal of these used paper towels. >>- Keep in mind that if the dirt or grease has been worked into the wood, it cannot be removed except by sanding it down, which we do not recommend unless exercised with extremely fine sandpaper (1200-1600 grit), and even then very sparingly. * Please Note: >1) Pay special attention to my instruction regarding: >> >>-> the infrequent application of Tru-Oil and Gunstock Wax >>>- if this procedure is performed too frequently, you could end up with excess wax on the neck (this is not bad for the neck, but it may impede playability). >>> >>>- In between the infrequent applications of oil & wax, Ernie Ball Wonder Wipes are great for daily use to clean and nourish the back of the neck and fretboard. >> >>-> the short amount of time (only 30 seconds) that the Tru-Oil should be left on after application before being wiped off. >>>- if you leave it on longer than 30 seconds (as the bottle may suggest) the Tru-Oil will begin to harden; this must be avoided. >>> >>>- the purpose of applying the oil is to nourish the unfinished wood, and NOT to create a hardened finish. > >2) If you are at all uncomfortable with this procedure, we encourage you to find a qualified tech. > >>-> We are not responsible for improperly performed repairs, setups, or maintenance. > >3) For more help, we encourage you to talk to the authorized music Man dealer of original purchase, or contact our distributor for your country. > >4) We are not responsible for * improperly performed repairs, setups, or maintenance. > >5) Some discoloration after many hours of playing is normal on unfinished necks. > >6) Check out our Instrument Care Products at this link here. >>Billy Imperial >>Ernie Ball, Inc. >> billy@ernieball.com >> > >> 866-823-2255 Ext 126 |
